MCG’s $1 Billion Facelift: Shane Warne Stand, Bigger Crowd, and BBQs Decks Coming Soon

Cricket is one of the most loved sports in the world. Just like the game, cricket stadiums are also special. Several cricket memories are associated with the stadiums. Every corner of the stadium is filled with unforgettable memories. The galleries, the seats, and the lights tell a different kind of story. All those are memorable. Melbourne Cricket Ground is an iconic cricket stadium. The stadium witnessed an uncountable number of matches over the years. On this ground, many players played excellent knocks and became great.  This iconic stadium is going to be renovated. With a huge budget, MCG will be decked up in a new form.

The Renovations:

Cricket Australia is ready for a new look. The renovations are on the way. With a whopping budget of $1 billion (AUD), the authority is going to renovate this historic stadium. The iconic Shane Warne stand will also be renovated. And the capacities will be increased. Apart from that, other changes will also be made.

With this mega project, the Southern stand of the stadium will be rebuilt. The capacity will be increased to 105,000. Along with that best in class facilities will be provided. The height of the stadium will also be increased iconic six light towers of the historic stadium will be still there and will be integrated into the new stand due to its heritage value. 

The rooftop lights will be the same as the Optus Stadium in Perth. There will be a special inclusion. Barbecue decks will be added in the renovation. The stadium is all set to have a new look. With the new look, MCG will be ready to host more iconic matches. 

Start of the Renovation:

It is a big project, so it will be time-consuming. In recent times, Cricket Australia’s schedule has been busy. A lot of matches will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Right now, Pakistan and Australia are locking horns at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the ‘Boxing Day Test’. Both teams are scheduled to play another Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

As the reports say, the project will start in 2027. As it is a big project, it will not be completed by the 2028 T20 World Cup. That edition of the T20 World Cup is scheduled to happen in Australia and New Zealand. Melbourne Cricket Ground will miss it.
