Matthew Short Takes Helm as Adelaide Strikers’ Captain in BBL 2023-24

Australia’s dynamic top-order batsman, Matthew Short, assumes the leadership role as the captain of the Adelaide Strikers for the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season, succeeding Travis Head. Short’s exceptional performance in the 2022-23 season, where he scored 458 runs and claimed 11 wickets, earned him the Player of the Tournament title and subsequent T20I and ODI debuts for the national team.

Head coach Jason Gillespie expressed confidence in Short’s captaincy, stating, “Matt was a standout choice to take on the captaincy at the Adelaide Strikers, and we are thrilled to announce him as our sixth captain. When he stepped up last year, we were very impressed with his leadership, and we are looking forward to seeing him grow further into the role.”

The 28-year-old cricketer, strategically placed lower in the batting order during the recent T20I series in India, showcased adaptability in a finishing role. Expressing his enthusiasm for the captaincy, Short mentioned, “I really enjoyed the little taste of captaincy I got last season, and I’m excited to put my full attention to it in BBL13.”

Adelaide Strikers, led by Short, will commence their BBL campaign against Brisbane Heat at Adelaide Oval on December 9. Notably, Travis Head and Alex Carey are expected to miss several matches due to the national side’s Test schedule, with a likely return to the squad between the Pakistan and West Indies series in mid-January. The Strikers aim to improve upon their seventh-place finish in the previous edition, where they secured five wins from 14 matches.
