Lucknow Super Giants Lose Shivam Mavi to Injury, Fast Bowling Options Remain Strong

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have suffered a blow to their bowling attack with the news that young pacer Shivam Mavi has been ruled out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to injury.

Mavi Expresses Disappointment

Mavi, acquired by LSG for a hefty INR 6.4 crore at the IPL auction this year, expressed his disappointment in a video posted by the franchise on Instagram.

“I will miss [the tournament] a lot,” Mavi said. “I had come here after an injury and had thought I would play matches for my team and do well. But unfortunately, I will have to leave because I have suffered an injury again.”

Mavi, who last played a competitive match in August 2023, did not elaborate on the specific nature of the injury. However, later reports from PTI suggested it was a rib issue, which may have been a recurrence of a previous injury.

Focus on Recovery and Support for the Team

Despite the setback, Mavi displayed a positive attitude, highlighting the importance of mental strength for a cricketer facing such challenges.

“A cricketer has to be mentally strong for this,” Mavi stated. “If you have an injury, you need to see what you have to do to make a comeback, what things you need to take care of.”

While missing out on playing in the IPL is undoubtedly a personal setback, Mavi pledged his continued support for the Lucknow franchise.

“We got a very good team,” Mavi said. “I will keep cheering for the team and hopefully, we will win.”

While Mavi’s absence weakens the LSG attack on paper, the franchise has a strong pool of fast bowlers to choose from. Currently sitting comfortably at fourth place in the points table with two wins from three games, LSG has shown they can win without Mavi’s contribution.

The likes of experienced campaigners like  Matt Henry, Shamar Joseph, and promising youngsters like Mohsin Khan, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Mayank Yadav provide the team with a variety of pace options. Additionally, all-rounders Yash Thakur, Arshad Khan, and Yudhvir Singh can also contribute with their seam bowling.
