“We all felt that he has a much more important role that he can play for us. And the hard work that he did, leading up to the season—all the runs he scored in domestic cricket—all played a part in that decision,” he added.
Sangakkara’s decision to promote Parag up the order proved to be a masterstroke, as the youngster looked comfortable and in control during his innings against Lucknow. His performance mirrored his success in domestic cricket, where he had led Assam with distinction and had been a standout performer in tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Ranji Trophy.
The move also highlighted Parag’s versatility and adaptability, traits that are essential for success in T20 cricket. Sangakkara praised Parag’s maturity and growth, noting that he had become more self-aware and focused both on and off the field.
“The biggest thing we’ve seen in Riyan is maturity. Irrespective of the support we offer players, self-awareness of your game, knowing what is good for you, how your lifestyle is both on and off the field—all of that has changed in Riyan,” Sangakkara said.
