KL Rahul And Ruturaj Gaikwad Fined 12 Lakhs Each After Being Charged With Slow Over Rate Penalty

The match at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow on 18th of April hurt CSK captain Ruturaj in more than one ways. While CSK, the much seasoned team lost the match against much newer team LSG, that too by a big margin of 8 wickets, Gaikwad now also has been subjected to pay a fine of 12 Lakh inr as the team maintained a slow over rate in their Indian Premier League match.

The winning captain KL Rahul was not spared either. Both the captains are subjected to pay the fine as their teams maintained the slow over rate. Of course the blow must have been a little bit softer for Rahul as his team won a big match, hence gaining 2 points and getting on the 5th position on the points table.

As it was the teams first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, the fine of 12 Lakh is a relatively lower than it could’ve been.

What is a Slow over-rate?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put forth strict rules especially in the last few years in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to address the slow over-rate issue.

The teams are asked to complete their 20 overs within 90 minutes including two strategic time-outs (of 2 minutes and 30 seconds each).

According to ICC guidelines, “Players will be subjected to a fine equivalent to 5% of their match fee for every over that falls short, with a maximum penalty capped at 50%. And one point off their charts” in case of a slow over rate.

What IPL management stated about the penalties

In an official statement, IPL authorities had given a leeway to both captains considering this was their first Offence. The teams had a slow over rate reportedly because of a slow pitch.

In their statement about KL the IPL said “Mr KL Rahul, Captain, Lucknow Super Giants has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 34 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Chennai Super Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow”.

For CSK’s new captain Ruturaj, the statement read as “Mr Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 34 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow”.
