Kapil Dev Expresses Disappointment Over India’s World Cup Loss, Emphasizes the Importance of Experience

Cricket legend Kapil Dev voiced his disappointment and disheartenment at India‘s recent World Cup loss, despite acknowledging the team’s commendable performance. Speaking at a book launch event, Kapil expressed his feelings about India playing well but falling short of securing the coveted trophy.

“I’m disappointed and disheartened that they played so well and yet they couldn’t win the trophy. But (it) doesn’t matter. Let’s hope what we didn’t understand this time, we’ll learn and do it better. That’s the way we are,” Kapil Dev remarked.

Learning from Experience

Highlighting the importance of experience, Kapil Dev emphasized that while today’s cricketers may be more skilful, the role of seasoned players is to guide them in the right direction. He acknowledged the superior skills of the current generation but stressed the valuable contribution of experienced players in shaping their cricketing journey.

“The young people are much better than us. The only thing we have — we have experience to guide them in the right direction. They are far better, but we can guide them better, that’s all,” Kapil Dev stated.

Respecting the Game and Opponents

Kapil Dev urged for a respectful perspective on the game, acknowledging that winning is a crucial aspect but emphasizing that the way of play holds equal importance. He noted that other teams also played well, particularly on the last day, and emphasized the need to respect their achievements.

“I know in our mind winning is everything. But the way of play is more important. Others had also come here to play. Others played better (on the) last day. We should respect that,” Kapil Dev added.

Hope for the Future

Despite the disappointment, Kapil Dev expressed hope for the future. He encouraged a learning mindset and suggested that the experiences from the recent World Cup would contribute to India’s growth and improvement in future tournaments.

Shifting the focus to a more nostalgic note, Kapil Dev shared that Chennai holds a special place in his heart as his favourite cricket venue. Fondly recalling memories of performing well in the city since his school days, Kapil expressed his affinity for the Chennai cricket ground.
