Kamran Akmal Commends BCCI’s Bold Move to Safeguard Cricket’s Future, Urges Respect for Domestic Play

A few days ago, BCCI revealed its central contract list. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan missed out on their spot in the contract. After that, a lot of buzz was created over this matter. Cricket experts shared their views on this matter. Recently, Kamran Akmal shared his view on this matter.

Ishan and Shreyas’s Exclusion:

The cricketing world was abuzz as Ishan Kishan, a promising talent of the BCCI’s central contract, found himself axed after opting out of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024. Despite his decision citing mental fatigue and skipping the South Africa series, eyebrows were raised when he chose not to participate in the domestic red-ball tournament, favoring training sessions with Mumbai Indians skipper, Hardik Pandya.

This move reportedly irked the higher-ups at the BCCI, resulting in Ishan’s exclusion from the central contract. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer, known for his prowess in limited overs, faced a similar fate. Despite refusing to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals due to injury concerns, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) cleared him fit for action. However, this didn’t sit well with the BCCI, leading to his removal from the central contract despite his impressive performances in limited-overs cricket.

These developments underline the BCCI’s stance on players prioritizing domestic commitments and fitness, regardless of their success in other formats. The decisions reflect the cricket board’s emphasis on upholding the integrity of domestic tournaments and ensuring players maintain their physical and mental well-being for the long term.

Kamran Akmal’s View on that:

Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal applauded the BCCI’s decision to penalize players for skipping domestic cricket. He emphasized the significance of domestic play as the foundation for international success, highlighting the importance of maintaining a robust supply line for nurturing cricket talent on the global stage.

Akmal said, “Shreyas Iyer played the first two Tests of the series. If you don’t value the cricket because of which you made it to the national team, what message is it going to give to all the youngsters?”

Later he added, “BCCI has made the right call, taking such strict action early on to control the damage. If they had given them a levy and handed them central contracts, a lot more players would have started playing on their own terms in the future. India have given a message to their players to ensure that nobody even thinks of doing something like this the next time. This is proof of good management. Nobody is bigger than the game.”
