The BCCI has officially opened the search for the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, indicating that current coach Rahul Dravid is unlikely to re-apply. Among the potential contenders for the high-profile position is former Australia coach and current Lucknow Super Giants coach, Justin Langer.
When asked about his interest in the role, Langer stated, “Well, I am curious. I’ve never ever thought about it. I have deep respect for any international coach because I understand the pressure, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role. From what I’ve seen with the amount of talent I’ve seen in this country, it would be fascinating.”
Langer reflected on his coaching journey, saying, “I went straight from playing to coaching – as an assistant coach, which is the best coach job in the world. You work about two hours a day, everyone’s your best friend, and you’ve got no accountability. Then you become head coach, oh man, then you work about 16 hours a day. No one likes you. And you’ve got 100% accountability!”
Having coached Australia for nearly four years, Langer’s tenure saw both successes and challenges. While Australia claimed the No.1 ranking in Tests and T20Is under his leadership, his coaching style reportedly led to conflicts with players, ultimately resulting in his resignation in 2022.
The BCCI’s search for a new head coach opens up possibilities for seasoned coaches like Langer, hinting at an exciting chapter ahead for Indian cricket post-T20 World Cup 2024.
