Jasprit Bumrah rested for Australia ODIs, New Zealand tour, replacement announced

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the upcoming 3 ODIs against Australia. Additionally, he won’t take part in the New Zealand tour that will consist of 5 ODIs and 3 T20Is. Mohammed Siraj will join the Indian squad as the replacement for Bumrah.

Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding with the ball in the recently concluded Test series in Australia. He was the leader of the pack and ended up with 21 wickets in 4 Tests, joint most with Nathan Lyon. He consistently ran in and bowled fast. The pacer was the go-to bowler for the skipper Virat Kohli. Bumrah was one of the premier reasons for India’s historic first Test series win down under.

But it came at an expense. He toiled hard and bowled 157.1 overs in 4 Tests. Most of those overs came in the extreme heat of Australia. The Indian selectors made a decision to rest him to keep him fresh for the limited overs series back home against Australia. The all-important ODI World Cup is also lined up this year. Hence, it makes sense to rest the leading bowler of the side who plays all 3 formats.

Mohammed Siraj has been in good form in the Ranji Trophy of late. The fast bowler bagged 7 wickets in a recent game against Punjab. Siddharth Kaul has also been named in the T20I squad to face New Zealand.
