After winning the coveted Ranji Trophy for the second consecutive year, Vidarbha went on to win the Irani Cup as well. They defeated Rest of India in Nagpur on the 4th day of the match. After clinching the trophy, the team members of Vidarbha made a heart-warming gesture.
On February 14, 2019, 40 CRPF soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack on the Jammu and Kashmir National Highway. The Irani Trophy Champions decided to donate the prize money of INR 10 Lakh to the families of the martyred soldiers in the Pulwama attack.
“We have decided to donate the prize money to the families of the martyrs at Pulwama. A small gesture from our side,” Faiz Fazal, the captain of Vidarbha, said at the presentation ceremony after winning the Irani Cup.
A magnificent season for Vidarbha
Vidarbha came into the Ranji Trophy as the defending champions. They didn’t lose a single game in the 2018-19 and clinched the title again. Then, they went into the Irani Cup and continued the winning run. They defeated the Ajinkya Rahane-led side by virtue of first innings lead. The captain Fazal was elated after the team’s victory.
Thanks to the almighty. The entire team did well in the entire season. That shows we have some characters in our team. The way the boys performed according to the occasion was wonderful despite the absence of Jaffer and Umesh Yadav. I am very happy for the team. Really happy to get a few centuries during the season. The support staff has been great. A thanks won’t be enough,” he further said.
