The ‘Impact Player’ rule is new to the cricket world. In the previous edition of the IPL 2023, BCCI introduced the rule. According to the impact player rule, teams can now name up to five substitutes along with their playing XI after the toss. Among these substitutes, one designated as the Impact Player can replace a member of the starting XI at any point during the game. This revolutionary rule eliminates the toss’s influence on team selection, as captains no longer need to provide team sheets at the toss. They now have the freedom to choose five players as substitutes, with one potential game-changer.

This season, a new rule has been a hot topic of discussion, drawing attention from players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Mohammed Siraj. They’ve expressed concerns about the rule favoring batters, making the game more one-sided. Even former players have joined the conversation, adding weight to the discussion. With so much debate and attention, it’s clear that this rule is shaking up the cricket world and sparking conversations among fans and experts alike.

Arun Dhumal on This Matter:

Arun Dhumal, the IPL chairman supported the Impact Player Rule, acknowledging its divisive nature. While some criticize its impact on bowlers and the development of Indian all-rounders, Dhumal highlighted the broader cricketing opportunities beyond the IPL. He emphasized the BCCI’s role in organizing various tournaments and providing alternative platforms for players to showcase their talent and thrive.

Dhumal said, “Is the responsibility of developing all-rounders (lies) only for this tournament? The BCCI is conducting more than 2,000 cricket matches in a year, where the players get the opportunities to showcase their talent. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, U-16, U-19… There are so many tournaments. And if you see, all the best all-rounders are still part of the team. So, you have to raise your benchmark as an all-rounder to be part of the team.”

There was a buzz about the removal of the impact player rule. Even some players raised concern over its removal. While talking about that, Dhumal said, “I can’t understand what this chat is all about. Do they want impact players without any impact, or little impact, or significant impact? You can’t have an impact player making no impact, we will discuss with all the stakeholders (about the rule staying). Will see their feedback and point of views also. And what works best for the tournament, in the interest of the players and franchises, we will do that. In the larger interest of the game, whatever is best for the tournament, we will do that.”
