The Chennai Super Kings, who are making a comeback in the IPL after serving a 2-year suspension, had the intention of retaining their core bunch in the IPL Auction 2018. Having retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, they had already restored the yellow flavor but they wanted to bring back a few more of their former players as they had a purse of INR 47 crores.
CSK went away with some absolute steals when it came to purchasing big players. Their first pick was Faf du Plessis for which they used the RTM card. KXIP had bought the South African for INR 1.6 crores but CSK was quick to pounce on Faf as they got a quality player for very few bucks.
Perhaps, they wanted to bring back Ravichandran Ashwin but KXIP ran away with him and so, as his replacement, CSK opted to go for the veteran off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh who came in for his base price of INR 2 crores. Next on the radar for the franchise was Dwayne Bravo as the Caribbean all-rounder was slotted in courtesy an RTM card for INR 6.4 crores.
CSK has had a history of keeping quality all-rounders amongst the ranks and continuing the trend, they added Shane Watson to the camp for INR 4 crores. Kedar Jadhav was another one who was brought in for a massive bid of INR 7.8 crores.
Despite having Dhoni in the side already as the wicketkeeper, the franchise added Ambati Rayudu in the squad as the backup. When it came to the spinners, CSK was inclined towards the leg-spinners as Imran Tahir and Karn Sharma were picked up in the camp. On the second day, Lungi Ngidi and Mitchell Santner were the big names slotted in by the franchise.
