IPL 2024 Points Table: Updated After SRH vs MI Match 8

The 2024 IPL season witnessed a historic night in Hyderabad as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) smashed their way to a record-breaking victory against Mumbai Indians (MI). The high-scoring encounter saw both teams rewrite the record books for most runs scored (523) and most sixes hit (38) in a men’s T20 match.

Record-Breaking Batting from SRH

Electing to bat first, SRH openers unleashed carnage from the get-go. Travis Head, playing his first game of the season, set the tone with a blistering 18-ball fifty, the fastest ever for SRH in the IPL. However, his record was short-lived as Abhishek Sharma smashed a 16-ball fifty moments later, claiming a new IPL record for the fastest fifty.

The left-handed duo stitched together a quickfire 68-run partnership, leaving the MI bowlers clueless. Later, Heinrich Klaasen continued the onslaught, powering SRH to a mammoth 277/3, the highest total ever recorded in the IPL.

Mumbai’s Valiant Chase Falls Short

Faced with a daunting target, MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan displayed aggressive intent, reaching a 50-run partnership within the first four overs. However, both departed shortly after, leaving the responsibility on to the young guns – Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma. The duo played some audacious shots, keeping the chase alive with a fifty partnership themselves.

However, SRH captain Pat Cummins brought back the experienced campaigner and the wicket of Varma proved to be the turning point. Mumbai’s chase eventually fizzled out as their batsmen struggled against the disciplined bowling attack of SRH, falling short by 31 runs.

Points Table Shakeup

This dominant victory propelled SRH from the seventh position to the third spot in the IPL points table. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, slumped to the ninth position after their second consecutive defeat.

The match also showcased the brilliance of young talents like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, hinting at a promising future for Indian cricket. With the season still young, the points table promises to see further movement as teams vie for top positions.
