IPL 2023: Why Rovman Powell is not playing today’s IPL match 7 against Gujarat Titans?

Match 7 of the Indian Premier League is set to be played between David Warner-led Delhi Capitals and Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans. Gujarat’s captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, Delhi Capitals are entering the game without their star Carribbean batter Rovman Powell.

Delhi Capitals have made a strategic decision to boost their bowling attack by including the talented South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje in their playing XI for their upcoming match. Nortje was unable to participate in their previous game due to his national commitments but is now set to make his return to the squad. In order to accommodate Nortje, Rovman Powell, who had a lackluster performance in the last game, has been left out of the team.

Despite being a powerful middle-order batsman, Powell was only able to score a single run off three deliveries against the Lucknow Super Giants. The team management has opted to prioritize strengthening their bowling lineup in the upcoming match, and thus have opted to replace Powell with the pacy and skillful Nortje.

Will we see Powell in action?

The team management has named Rovman Powell as one of the five substitutes  that could later join the game as impact players. Powell’s name has been included alongside fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and  Chetan Sakariya. However, since Delhi are batting first, it is highly unlikely that they would bring Powell in, because that would mean replacing a foreign name and the only viable option would be Anrich Nortje. The more plausible option for Delhi Capitals would be to include Chetan Sakariya or Khaleel Ahmed in the second innings to help strengthen their bowling unit. However, there is still a bleak possibility that we could see Rovman Powell in action today.
