IPL 2020 : Why is so delay in final schedule announcement?

With just a few weeks to go for the 13th edition of IPL, the BCCI is yet to disclose the full schedule of the tournament. As suggested by a report on the Mumbai Mirror, there was an issue with the accommodations which is now sorted.

The reason behind the delay

Indian cricket recently handed over the initial dates of the IPL 2020 schedule to the franchise around 20 days ago but that is it. Despite the IPL being to be kicked off in a month’s time, there is no clarity over the full schedule of the tournament yet. According to the tentative schedule given to the franchises, Mumbai Indians will be playing Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural game in Mumbai and Delhi Capitals will have a face-off with Kings XI Punjab in Delhi the following day. However, there has been no official announcement.

A lot of angles coming up from the franchise and board side as the reasons behind the IPL General Council failing to announce the final schedule for the upcoming edition. A few pre-planned conclaves and conferences in Kolkata and Delhi in the second and third week of April led to accommodation problem which was a major reason for which the planning could not be done properly. The problem is now sorted. But Rajasthan Royals wanted Guwahati as a venue which created more disturbance as a PIL has been filed over their move to shift a couple of games there.

Ganguly’s plans puzzle franchises

On the other hand, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly’s proposed All-Star game has made the franchises baffled a bit. Ganguly already committed to send few Indian players for the Asia XI and World XI games in Bangladesh on March 18 and 21. This gave another shock to the franchises as they might have to release some strong Indian names while the franchises were already uninterested to release players the All-Star game.

The board wants to send four-five players for the Dhaka games. But the franchises think that such shifting of players with just 10 days in the hand for IPL could affect the preparations and promotions.
