IPL 2020: IPL General Council Meeting to Have Three Major Discussing Points

The IPL General Council meeting is on the cards to discuss the vital points of the upcoming IPL 2020. Now as the doubts have cleared and there is no uncertainty over the future of the league, the planning regarding the schedule and logistics will start with this meeting scheduled to be held in a few days’ time.

IPL 2020 schedule to be decided

After the ICC decided to postpone the men’s T20 World Cup 2020, the BCCI started to plan the IPL 2020 in no time. It was already mentioned that this time IPL, in all probability would be shifted to UAE considering the pandemic situation in India. The Indian cricket board is now planning aggressively for the same and also waiting for permission from the central government. According to a BCCI official’s version to PTI, “There will be three principal points on the agenda and that will primarily be discussed as and when the GC meets.”

Shifting to UAE and the schedule of the IPL 2020 is definitely the most important point of discussion for the General Council. According to a senior official of a franchise, the board is going to shorten the tournament and IPL will be a 44 to 48-day event this year. The number of days will eventually depend on the number of double-headers. “As far as I know, they are not curtailing the tournament. We will have all the 60 matches in the old format where teams play 14 games.”

Next big discussing points

The next big things are to be discussed in the General Council meeting of IPL 2020 are Standard of Operating Procedure for teams that will include the discussions related to bio-bubble and training facilities. The senior BCCI official informed, “The teams that will be stationed in Dubai can practice at the ICC Academy by paying a fee.” A limited number of net bowlers will be allowed in case teams have enough extra players. It may not be possible to create a bio-bubble like England and Wales Cricket Board, strict measures will be taken. According to one franchise official, “The hotels where we book rooms, the floors that will have our team members will be a sanitized area and that will be done in consultation with hotel authorities.”

The next big thing on the agenda is going to be the broadcaster issue. The timing of night matches is expected to be discussed. Whether those will be held at the usual 8 pm slot or advanced by 30 minutes, this will be a major point. The duration of the tournament is reportedly going to be discussed as well as IPL is Star Sports marquee event.
