IPL 2020 Auction: Focus area for Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the most curious teams in the Indian Premier League history. Despite having arguably world’s best batsman in Virat Kohli and some of the T20 Superstars like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle over the years they could never cross the final hurdle to win the trophy. Even their 2019 performance was quite underwhelming as they finished with the wooden spoon at the 8th position. As a result of that, the team management identified that a wholesome change is needed and wanted to start afresh once again. RCB has released 12 of the total 25 players from the 2019 roster and list includes some of the well-known international players like Marcus Stoinis, Colin de Grandhomme, and Heinrich Klassen.

As a result, there are quite a few areas in the RCB squad where gaps need to be filled from the upcoming auction. In batting, they have Kohli and de Villiers along with two good domestic players in Devdutt Padikkal who had a good season in limited over cricket and Gurkirat Singh. In the IPL auction, they should target at least two big names in the batting. In the top order they can opt for Chris Lynn, Aaron Finch or Evin Lewis, all of them are capable enough to provide blistering starts like the way Gayle used to provide earlier. In the middle order, they can opt for Eoin Morgan, who already played for them earlier or opt for Colin Ingram or David Miller. Another potential option for them in the middle order can be Yousuf Pathan but his chance of success may be less as per going by the recent form.

They have three good Indian fast bowlers and would look to go for overseas fast bowlers to add verity and back up. Some of their potential picks can be Andrew Tye, Anrich Nortje or Alzarri Joseph. They will also need spin backups and can go for a leg-spinning option beside Yuzvendra Chahal in Hayden Walsh who already had a successful Caribbean Premier League earlier in the year. They can also go for one of the Indian wicket-keepers as back up of experienced Parthiv Patel.

RCB is one of the well-supported franchise in IPL and their fans would hope for a change of their fortune based on the new players included in the squad post-auction.
