India vs Australia 2018: Virender Sehwag backs Rahul and Shaw to open

Indian cricket team is all set for its third overseas assignment this year. It’s the tour to Australia. Even before the start of the tour, the cricketing fraternity is vocal about it. India’s former opener Virender Sehwag is also not behind in making his opinions clear for the tour down under. Virender Sehwag picks openers Kl Rahul and Prithvi Shaw for the Australia test series.

Virender Sehwag has opined on the 2 openers for India for the all-important Test series. He reckons KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw should be the preferred pair.

“Prithvi and Rahul should open. Because the trend Down Under is that whoever is an attacking batsman makes a lot of runs and wins matches for the team,” Sehwag, told India TV.

Shaw made a wonderful start to his Test career in the recent series against Windies. The 19-year-old scored a century on his debut and then followed it up with a fifty in the next Test. He won the Man of the Series as well. Despite his great start, playing in the bouncy Australian conditions will be a challenge for the youngster.

On the other hand, KL Rahul has been struggling for form. He had a tough time in England barring the last Test innings where he slammed a hundred. Against Windies, he couldn’t score big either. But Virender Sehwag backed him for the opener’s slot.

Murali Vijay also called back

Team India has recalled Murali Vijay for the Test squad. He was India’s first choice for the opener’s slot a year back. But his poor run of form in South Africa and England led to his omission midway through the England tour. But he went to play for Essex in County Cricket. His impressive show brought him back in contention.

India’s opening combination has been a worry for a long time. Shikhar Dhawan also got a few chances but he ended up getting dropped each time. India might stick with Rahul and Shaw in Australia and will hope that the pair sustains for a long time together.
