The first Test between Australia and India went into the 3rd day which is also known as the moving day. More of than not, this determines the direction in which the Test is headed. Indeed it proved to be moving as the visitors finished having the advantage.
Rain delayed the start of the proceeding earlier. The first session had a couple of stops and starts. Australia began with the overnight score of 191/7. Jasprit Bumrah removed Mitchell Starc for 15 very early. Nathan Lyon came out with intent and frustrated the Indian bowlers.
Travis Head, the half-centurion stood firm until Mohammed Shami removed him for 72. A valuable partnership of 31 took the hosts close to the Indian total. Shami dismissed Josh Hazlewood off the next ball to bundle Australia out for 235. India had a slender lead of 15 runs and the first innings of both the teams had almost canceled each other out.
Indian top-order batted better this time
The Indian openers were under pressure due to the failures in the first innings. They were facing the pace trio that was running in under overcast conditions. But KL Rahul and Murali Vijay handled the new ball pretty well. The duo didn’t go for the expensive shots this time.
After 9 overs, India scored just 11 runs. But by that time, the threat of the new ball was over. Rahul then began to open up his shoulders. The fifty of the innings came up in the 15th over. The openers added 63 runs but both fell in quick succession. Starc accounted for Vijay’s wicket for 18 while Hazlewood sent Rahul back for 44.
In a slight spot of bother at 76/2, came together Cheteshwar Pujara and the skipper Virat Kohli. The pair weathered the storm and provided the stability. The scoring rate wasn’t high yet they focused on occupying the crease. Whenever the opportunity arrived, they cashed in on that as well.
A partnership of 71 gave India the edge until Nathan Lyon was finally rewarded for his hard work. The spinner dismissed Kohli for 34 late in the day. Ajinkya Rahane walked in to bat and took the team safely to stumps. Pujara is still unbeaten at 40 and looks set to score more. Having a lead of 166 runs with 7 wickets in hand, India certainly hold the advantage going into the last 2 days.
