India Dominates Asia Cup 2023 Final, Rohit Sharma Secures 2nd Title as Captain

India made a resounding statement on Sunday in Colombo by delivering a dominating performance in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, the captain, led his team to a record-extending 8th Asia Cup title, underlining their credentials ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Sri Lanka’s Struggles

Sri Lanka, the host nation, faced a formidable Indian side that was in scintillating form. Their batting lineup was no match for India’s fiery pacers as they were bowled out for a paltry 50 runs. This dismal total marked Sri Lanka’s second-lowest in ODI history and their lowest against India in the 50-over format. Additionally, it became the lowest total ever recorded in Asia Cup history.

The hero of the match was undoubtedly Mohammed Siraj, the Indian pacer, who delivered a sensational performance with the new ball. Siraj’s fiery spell left Sri Lanka reeling at a mere 12 for 6 at one point. His incredible figures of 6 wickets for just 21 runs in 7 overs showcased his mastery of pace and swing. Sri Lanka was eventually bundled out for 50 runs in just 13.1 overs.

Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Triumph

Chasing down the meagre target of 50 runs, India displayed their batting prowess. They accomplished this feat in a mere 6.1 overs, securing their most significant win in terms of balls remaining in ODI history.

With this victory, Rohit Sharma secured his second Asia Cup title as captain. His earlier triumph came in 2018 when he led India to victory, making him only the third Indian captain to achieve this feat. The other two skippers with multiple Asia Cup titles for India are MS Dhoni and Mohammad Azharuddin, each holding two titles.

India’s Multiple Asia Cup Title Winners

  • MS Dhoni: 2 wins in 3 finals (2010 and 2016)
  • Mohammad Azharuddin: 2 wins in 2 finals (1991 and 1995)
  • Rohit Sharma: 2 wins in 2 finals (2018 and 2023)
  • Dilip Vengsarkar: 1 win in 1 final (1988)
  • Sunil Gavaskar: 1 win as captain (1984)
