“In the seven years, I was part of the team, I never went near a selection meeting”: Ravi Shastri

Under the mentorship of Ravi Shastri, the Indian Cricket team was a feared team in all formats of cricket. India was consistent under Kohli and Shastri regime. However, they also faced some unnecessary criticism and were often portrayed as the bad guys of the team.

There were far too many scandals that rocked Indian cricket in the years between the conclusion of Ravi Shastri‘s leadership of the team and the start of Rahul Dravid’s reign. After being relieved of his duties as the ODI team’s captain first, Virat Kohli later resigned as the Test team’s captain.

Additionally, there were rumors that Sourav Ganguly, the then-president of the BCCI, and Virat Kohli might have a falling out. Ravi Shastri dropped a huge surprise when discussing events that occurred during his time, claiming that many people actively participated in squad selection sessions and deemed them to be against the constitution.

Shastri’s comments follow several stories that claim Sourav Ganguly, a former BCCI president, was a major factor in Virat Kohli’s removal as the team’s ODI captain. Shastri acknowledged that he never went to a selection meeting and that he wasn’t even invited.

Ravi Shastri said

“I have zero first-hand experience. In the seven years, I was part of the team, I never went near a selection meeting. I wasn’t invited either. I think, in the long run, yes. As a coach, you spend a lot of time with the boys, it’s important; not in the voting capacity, but at least to hear what’s the selectors are thinking, what’s their train of thought. And then, to decide what the right thing for the side,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo.

“I have zero idea how it starts, and how it finishes, and who are there in the meeting. From what I gather, there were a lot of people over the last 3-4 years inside the selection meetings, who were not supposed to be there. It’s against the constitution,” Shastri further said.
