ILT20 Imposes 12-Month Ban on Afganistan’s Key Player Noor Ahmed

Noor Ahmad, who plays for Afghanistan and Gujarat Titans in the IPL, got a 12-month ban from ILT20 for not following his contract with Sharjah Warriors. In the IPL, he’s expected to be important for his team. He’s taken 87 wickets in 82 T20 matches, with an average of 24.93 and an economy rate of 7.27. This makes him a valuable player for the league.

Noor Ahmad, who represented the Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20 during the January-February 2023 season, demonstrated promising performance with the ball. Despite being offered retention under the same terms for Season 2, the leg-spinner opted not to renew his contract with the franchise, resulting in a breach of the Player Agreement.

Official Statement of ILT20 Committee:

The case was referred to a three-member Disciplinary Committee consisting of ILT20’s CEO David White, Col. Azam (Head of Security and Anti-Corruption), and Zayed Abbas (Emirates Cricket Board Member) for adjudication. After extensive discussions and hearing from Noor Ahmad and Sharjah Warriors, the committee decided to impose a 12-month ban on the Afghanistan spinner. Despite considering a 20-month ban, it was ultimately ruled out.

Additionally, the committee acknowledged that Noor Ahmad was a minor when he signed the Player Agreement. Ahmad conveyed to the ILT20 committee that he relied on his agent to fully inform him about the contract terms, highlighting the need for comprehensive understanding and transparency in such agreements.

The committee stated, “The International League T20 has banned spinner Noor Ahmad for 12 months for breaching his Player Agreement with Sharjah Warriors who had signed him for Season 1 of the tournament. Noor was offered another year’s extension by the Warriors but refused to sign the retention notice for Season 2”.

The committee also added, “Noor played for Sharjah Warriors in Season 1 of the ILT20 (January-February 2023) who sent him a retention notice on the same terms and conditions in accordance with the Player Agreement terms ahead of Season 2. Following Noor’s refusal, the Sharjah Warriors approached the ILT20 to intervene in this dispute.”

Ban on Naveen-ul-Haq:

Noor Ahmed’s co-player in Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq, who played for Sharjah Warriors in ILT20, received a 20-month ban for breaking his contract. Like Noor Ahmad, the team offered to keep him for another year, but he said no. He played 9 matches, getting 11 wickets with an average of 24.36.

ILT20 CEO David White said, “All players and teams must follow the rules. Naveen-ul-Haq didn’t stick to his contract with Sharjah Warriors, so he got a 20-month ban.” It shows how important it is for players to stick to their agreements in sports leagues.
