ICC World Cup 2023 Update: England Captain Jos Buttler Expresses Disappointment as India Thwarts Chasing Efforts

England’s captain, Jos Buttler, expressed his frustration and disappointment after India secured a comprehensive 100-run victory in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The clash at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow saw India successfully defend a target of 230 runs, leaving England’s hopes dashed.

Jos Buttler didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment and said, “Yeah. Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, we fancied ourselves to chase 230 but it was the same old story.” Buttler’s words reflect the frustration within the English camp as they once again found themselves falling short.

Hopes of Chasing

Buttler noted that England had a strong desire to chase down the target despite any potential dew factor. The England skipper emphasized that their bowlers had performed admirably throughout the tournament. However, it was their batting performance that left much to be desired in this particular match against India.

Liam Livingstone emerged as England’s top-scorer in the match, contributing 27 runs from 46 balls. Buttler acknowledged the effort by Livingstone but also highlighted the broader struggles within the team.

“The gut feeling was we wanted to chase, whether dew came or not. Our bowling has been great but again the batting was disappointing. I think we have to be committed to that. I felt I had to stay there as the Indian bowlers were bowling well and had to soak in the pressure. I tried to stay there but you have to be committed and it wasn’t to be.”, he added.

Hopes for the 2025 Champions Trophy

Buttler explained that he felt the need to stay at the crease as India’s bowlers were applying considerable pressure. Despite the challenges, he aimed to absorb the pressure and guide England to a successful chase. Unfortunately, things did not pan out as expected.

When questioned about England’s prospects of qualifying for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Buttler maintained a sense of optimism. He indicated that although England’s performance had not been at its peak, there was still much to play for in the ongoing World Cup.

“Some tough players in there but we are a long way from our best. (On Champions Trophy Qualification) We are aware of that and it’s still lots to play for,” said Buttler. The ICC World Cup 2023 determines the top seven teams for qualification, and Pakistan, as the host, gains direct entry into the 2025 Champions Trophy.

England’s Current Standing

Following this loss to India, England finds themselves at the bottom of the ICC World Cup 2023 points table. With just two points from six matches and a net run-rate of -1.652, England faces an uphill battle to turn their campaign around.

Jos Buttler’s candid statements reflect the disappointment and determination within the England camp. As they strive to resurrect their campaign in the World Cup, they recognize the significance of every upcoming match in their quest for qualification and redemption in the tournament.
