ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021: England Focusing to Become First Team to Win World Cup in Both Formats

England had a complete overhaul of their white-ball structure and mentality after a disastrous campaign in the 2015 World Cup. Under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, their newfound approach of aggressive cricket was vindicated with a win in the 2019 50-over World Cup. They also came very close to win the World T20 in 2016 when a Carlos Brathwaite magic stopped them from winning the trophy. Now England will again target to become the first team to hold the World Champions title in both 50-over and 20-over formats at the same time.

On paper, they have the firepower to take this trophy home. In Jos Buttler and Jason Roy they have two of the most destructive opening batters with them. They will be followed by an anchor in Dawid Malan and some more attacking options like Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone. Eoin Morgan was in terrible form during the IPL but he still took his team Kolkata Knight Riders to the final with some inspiring captaincy. If he can find some form, he can be a very good finisher for England along with Moeen Ali. Moeen is the premier all-rounder in the team in the absence of Ben Stokes and will play a key role with his off-spin and batting where he can be used as a floater.

In bowling, they will miss the pace and accuracy of Jofra Archer as well as the variations of Sam Curran as both are out due to injury. That could be a potential weakness in their team. They have a few good fast bowlers in Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills but whether they can be effective on the slow pitches of UAE has to be seen. In Adil Rashid, they have a good leg spinner in their squad and Rashid will play a very important role for them in the World T20.

England as a vastly improved side in the limited over formats are favourites to qualify from their group to the semi-finals. However, they will face good challenges from West Indies, South Africa, Australia as well as the two sub-continental teams with strong spin attacks. In this format, even a couple of losses can derail their campaign and England will be careful about the threat and will try to bring their best performance in the tournament.
