“I Think It’s Because Of The Lack Of Commitment”, Says Muttiah Muralidaran On Sri Lanka’s Awful World Cup Campaign

In the 2023 World Cup which concluded this month with Australia lifting the trophy for the sixth time, several teams showed up brilliantly side by. Among them, one was India who won 10 consecutive tournaments for the first time in World Cup history and reached the final knockout stage to face Australia. Meanwhile, these two countries had a memorable World Cup campaign this year, Sri Lanka witnessed a dreadful campaign owing to its losing streaks and position on the leaderboard.

“Worst performance since 1975”: Muttiah

Having played a total of nine matches in the 2023 World Cup so far, the Sri Lankan could only manage to win two of them. By getting defeated in all the other seven matches, Sri Lanka finished ninth among all the 10 contending teams on the leaderboard.

On the team’s display and execution of performance, former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralidaran remarked “I would say that ever since we got the World Cup qualification in 1975, this is our worst performance ever. I think it’s because of the lack of commitment. I don’t know what happened in the middle, but the fact remains that they weren’t good enough.”

Speaking up on SLC’s ban by ICC

Following constant political interference in the country’s cricket board, the ICC decided to ban Sri Lanka Cricket, forbidding them to play any further ICC tournaments. This move by the ICC put the country’s cricket future in danger about which Muttiah showed concern by saying “We need to understand that there shouldn’t be any personal agendas involved. It’s about the future of those young prospects who want to play cricket for their country and live the life of a cricketer. Both sides need to think about these cricketers, sort out this problem amicably, and bring back the glory we had before.”
