“I definitely back myself to make the squad”: Shubman Gill on T20 World Cup chances

As India prepares for the T20 World Cup 2024, the spotlight is on the selection of the squad, with players vying for a spot in the final 15. Among them is Shubman Gill, the talented batsman who has expressed confidence in his selection, citing his exceptional performance in the IPL 2023 season.

Gill, who scored nearly 900 runs in the IPL 2023 season, believes that his impressive performance speaks for itself. “I definitely back myself to make the squad. If I don’t back myself after scoring 900 runs last season, then I don’t think there would be any point in scoring those runs,” Gill said in an interview with news agency ANI.

The young cricketer also highlighted his growth as a captain, crediting his teammates for their support. “My captaincy experience has gone well. I have learned a lot of things. I think Noor and Rashid have been nothing short of magnificent for me as a captain and the team,” he added.

Gill’s remarks come amid reports of a meeting between Rohit Sharma and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel to finalize India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. The selection committee is expected to announce the 15-member squad by May 1, ahead of the tournament scheduled to begin on June 1 in the USA and the West Indies.

The selection process is said to be particularly challenging, with confusion surrounding the choice between Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, who all play similar roles in the batting order. Despite this competition, Gill remains optimistic about his chances and is eager to represent his country on the world stage in the upcoming tournament.
