In a poignant expression of the deep disappointment felt by the Indian cricket team, batter Shreyas Iyer penned an emotional note following India‘s defeat in the World Cup 2023 final against Australia. The Australians secured their sixth World Cup crown with a clinical performance, beating India by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Despite an impeccable run in the tournament, winning ten consecutive matches, India stumbled when it mattered most, falling short in the final showdown. Iyer, who had been sensational in the business end of the competition, contributing a century in the semi-final against New Zealand, faced an early dismissal in the final as India was restricted to 240 runs.
The aftermath of the loss witnessed heart-wrenching scenes on the field, with captain Rohit Sharma holding back tears, Virat Kohli appearing gutted during the Player of the Tournament ceremony, and Jasprit Bumrah consoling a visibly emotional Mohammed Siraj. In a social media post, Shreyas Iyer revealed the team’s heartbreak, stating, “We’re heartbroken; it still hasn’t sunk in and it won’t for a while. My first World Cup was an experience that has taught me so much and made me grateful for everything that’s come my way.” Iyer expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you to the @BCCI, team management, support staff, my teammates, and you, the fans, for backing us from the beginning right up until the end.” He added, “And congratulations to the entire Australian team on a marvelous campaign.”
Indian players, including Iyer and R Ashwin, displayed sportsmanship in defeat, with Ashwin stating, “Credit to the Australian team for putting up a perfect show in the big final in the World Cup.” Coach Rahul Dravid, addressing the post-match press conference, acknowledged the heavy emotions in the dressing room but emphasized the resilience of the team, stating, “I’m sure that the sun will come up tomorrow morning. We’ll learn from it. We’ll reflect.”
