Glamorgan Cricket Legend Alan Wilkins Returns as New Club President

Glamorgan County Cricket Club (CCC) announced the appointment of cricketing legend Alan Wilkins as their new President on a three-year term. Wilkins, a highly respected broadcaster and former Glamorgan player, returns to the club in a leadership role, reconnecting with his cricketing roots.

A Career Highlighted by Playing and Broadcasting Excellence

Wilkins’ association with Glamorgan began on the pitch, where he carved out a successful career as a left-arm seamer between 1976 and 1983.  During his eight seasons with the club,  he captured a total of 243 first-class wickets and a further 130 wickets in List A games.  His contributions were instrumental in helping Glamorgan reach their first-ever one-day final, the Gillette Cup against Middlesex, in 1977.

Following his retirement from playing, Wilkins embarked on a distinguished broadcasting career.  He initially started in South Africa before returning to Wales, where he became a prominent figure in BBC Wales’ sports coverage, particularly for rugby, football, and cricket.  Currently, he works for Star Sports India, showcasing his extensive cricketing knowledge to a global audience.

Wilkins: “Full Circle Back to Where My Cricketing Journey Began”

Born in Cardiff, Wilkins expressed his excitement about returning to Glamorgan, describing it as a “full circle back to where my cricketing journey began.”   He succeeds Gerard Elias, who is stepping down after a four-year term as President.

“Firstly I am thrilled, and honoured to have been considered for the role of President, knowing who has held the position in the past,” Wilkins said.  His statement reflects the prestigious nature of the President’s role within Glamorgan Cricket Club and his appreciation for the legacy he inherits.

A Vision for the Future: On and Off the Field Impact

Wilkins is not merely returning for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.  He has a clear vision for the club’s future, aiming to make a positive impact on and off the field.  “I want to make a difference, both on and off the field for Glamorgan,” he declared.

The appointment of Wilkins also signifies a period of change and rejuvenation for Glamorgan.   “We have some fresh faces coming in, myself included,”  Wilkins pointed out.  He specifically mentioned the arrival of the new Head Coach, Grant Bradburn, with whom he is familiar through his broadcasting work with Pakistan.   Wilkins expressed his enthusiasm for Bradburn’s cricketing philosophy and his eagerness to witness its implementation at Sophia Gardens, Glamorgan’s home ground.

Shared Enthusiasm:  Glamorgan Backs Wilkins’ Leadership

Wilkins’ appointment has been met with enthusiasm from the Glamorgan leadership.  Mark Rhydderch-Roberts, Chair of Glamorgan CCC, expressed his delight at Wilkins’ acceptance of the role.  He acknowledged the value Wilkins brings to the table, not just through his cricketing expertise but also through his vast network and global recognition within the cricketing world.

“Not only will Alan add cricket expertise, gathered from his years of playing and commentating, but he is so well known and respected throughout world cricket that he will be well placed to support the club as we create a new Glamorgan future,” Rhydderch-Roberts stated.
