Gavaskar Criticizes T20 Power-Hitting, Calls for Better Contest Between Batters and Bowlers

The IPL 2024 is just in its midway and the tournament is all exciting. Fans are enjoying another exciting version of it. But the season is getting highlighted by the high-scoring games. The 200-run mark has been crossed multiple times. But somehow bowlers are struggling in this situation and former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is not happy with this. He shared his view on this matter.

IPL 2024 Become High Scoring:

In the IPL 2024 season, batting has reigned supreme, transforming it into a paradise for batsmen. Within just 35 matches, the 200-run mark has been breached an astounding 15 times, with five of those instances surpassing the formidable 250-run milestone. Among the most explosive batting units, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have emerged as frontrunners, showcasing their prowess on multiple occasions.

One particularly electrifying display occurred at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the Delhi Capitals. SRH unleashed an onslaught, amassing a staggering 266/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Their dominance was evident from the outset, with an explosive start that saw them rack up 125 runs in the powerplay alone. Travis Head emerged as a force to be reckoned with, blasting a blistering 89 off just 32 balls, including a lightning-fast 50 off a mere 16 deliveries. Shahbaz Ahmed provided invaluable support, remaining unbeaten on 59 runs from 29 balls. SRH’s batting juggernaut has left their opponents in awe, as they effortlessly crossed the 200-run mark against formidable teams like RCB, MI, and KKR.

Gavaskar’s View:

Gavaskar expressed concern on air, suggesting to the BCCI how bowlers can be safeguarded. He proposed pushing boundary ropes further back, particularly at smaller venues, citing the gap between the advertisement board and the fence where the stands begin.

Sunil Gavaskar said, “I wouldn’t suggest any changes to a cricket bat because they are all within regulations, but I have been saying this for a long time, increase the size of the boundary at every ground. Look at this ground today, there is enough space to take it back a little more by a couple of meters. It can often prove to be the difference between a catch and a sixer. You can push that LED or advertisement boards even further so that the boundary rope can go back by 2-3 meters and that will make a difference. Otherwise, the bowlers are the only ones who will suffer.”

Later he added, “What we have been seeing in T20 cricket over the last few days is that this is batting like the coach tells in the nets, ‘This is the last round,’ and everybody starts swinging their bat around bang, bang whether they get out or not. It’s enjoyable to a little extent, but after that it gets…not so exciting. I wanted to use a stronger word, but no.”
