Gautam Gambhir Criticizes BCCI’s Hypothetical Decision Not to Start IPL in India

The recent IPL 2024 auction saw 72 players being sold to 10 franchises ahead of the 17th edition of the tournament. Mitchell Starc made history by fetching a record-breaking bid of INR 24.75 Crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders, becoming the most expensive player in IPL history. This bid surpassed the previous record held by his Australian teammate and captain, Pat Cummins, who was sold for INR 20.50 Crore to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Over the years, the IPL has witnessed exponential growth in its commercial value and currently ranks as the second most valuable sporting league globally in terms of media rights.

Former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL winner Gautam Gambhir expressed strong views on the significance of the IPL for Indian cricket. He stated that it would have been a grave mistake for the BCCI not to commence the IPL, emphasizing its pivotal role in the development of Indian cricket.

“I believe it would’ve been a terrible choice for BCCI since the IPL stands out as the most beneficial development for Indian cricket,” Gambhir remarked, highlighting the IPL’s crucial contribution to the sport’s growth in India.

Gambhir’s comments reflect the widespread recognition of the IPL’s impact on Indian cricket and its stature as a premier global cricketing event.
