Gambhir Backed to Succeed Dravid as India Coach After T20 World Cup

Gautam Gambhir, the two-time World Cup winner and former Indian opener, has been strongly endorsed to take over from Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian cricket team after the T20 World Cup. Dravid, who will step down following the tournament, has confirmed he will not reapply for the position.

Among those backing Gambhir is Lalchand Rajput, the coach who led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Rajput praised Gambhir as a “no-nonsense guy” and a “shrewd tactician” who has demonstrated his strategic acumen while mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in 2024.

“Gambhir is a no-nonsense guy, he has played cricket the hard way and he reads the game well and that has been seen for KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) as well,” Rajput said. “KKR was the same team last year and you see the difference that he made this year. He is a shrewd tactician as well. I am sure with all his experience — he has won two World Cup (wins) as a player — that will really add value. He is a good candidate, but it all depends upon BCCI who they want. He will be the right candidate to take Indian cricket forward.”

Sourav Ganguly and WV Raman have also voiced support for Gambhir. The deadline for the head coach applications was May 27, but it’s unclear if Gambhir has applied.
