Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh takes a dig at Ravi Shastri following Gill’s hundred against England

India’s new number three in Test Shubhman Gill scored a magnificent hundred in the Second Test against England In a tricky situation. It was Gill’s first hundred after 12 innings in the longest format.

Notably, before the hundred Gill wasn’t able to score even a single half-century batting at number three in Test since July 2023.

Questions were being raised about his place in the XI given the fact that he demanded that position from the team management a number at which experienced batter Pujara did well for more than a decade

The Statement

Ravi Shastri the former Indian head coach questioned Gill’s approach while batting at number three and warned him about Pujara’s performance in domestic cricket.

“It’s a fresh side, a young side. These youngsters have to prove themselves. Don’t forget, Pujara is waiting. He is grinding it out at the Ranji Trophy and is always on the radar,” he had said while on commentary.

The Response

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh who has been mentoring Gill took a  dig at the former Indian head coach’s comment after the right-hander ended the century draught during the second innings of the Second Test which India won by 106 runs. “Rising to the occasion once again and playing a well-balanced knock! Good to see the three-digit mark. Well played my boy – let the bat do the talking,” said Yuvraj.

Gill’s hundred has caused a sweet headache for the team management with regards to team selection for the Third Test. With the possible availability of Kohli and Rahul in Rajkot it would be interesting to see which two players will make way for the duo. With Gill back to form the chances of him getting dropped are quite slim.
