Excited Kohli focusing on World Test Championship

India is all set to begin the World Test Championship journey with two-match series against West Indies. Speaking about the same, Indian captain Virat Kohli sounded excited and termed this as the right strategy.

Virat Kohli said that this championship will make the game a lot more competitive and will give a new dimension to the Test matches. He also thinks that this is the right move at the right time. During the West Indies Players Association awards, night on Monday Kohli said, “People have been talking about Test cricket not being relevant or dying down. For me, the competition has gone up two-fold the last couple of years.”

Kohli thinks as the teams will look for those extra points there will hardly any boring draws. “That’s going to be the essence of this Test championship as well. There will hardly be any boring draws, there will be exciting draws, because everyone will want those extra points.”

India will kick start their journey of the same on August 22 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and newly reappointed Head Coach, Ravi Shastri. Speaking about the team, Kohli agreed that batsmen have not lived up to the standard. He added, “Batsmanship will always be hard at the Test level, but even harder now with the Championship where every decision you make counts in the larger scheme of things.” He wants his men to be more consistent and balanced in this more competitive era of Test cricket.

The World Test Championship will end with the top two teams playing the final in two years down the line. The inaugural edition will see the elite nations — Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies fighting for the title over 71 Test matches in 27 series. The finale will be staged on June 2021 in the United Kingdom.
