The match is a crucial one for Chennai Super Kings as they are in a do or die situation if they wish to go for the playoffs. After an excruciating loss against Gujarat Titans, CSK needs to win their next two fixtures. Winning the match would mean a direct entry into the playoffs for Rajasthan Royals.

Jadeja’s field obstruction

Rajasthan won the toss today and opted to bat first. They scored a total of 141 runs, a low run-chase for CSK especially since this IPL season has seen several 200+ scorer matches.

In the second innings, CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja had been given an out at 5 runs scored off of 7 balls. This was because he had obstructed the field.

Obstructing the field is one of the nine methods of dismissing a batsman in the sport of cricket. Either batsman can be given out if he wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.

The third ump’s view was that Jadeja was watching the ball and aware of where it was heading. According ti the umpire, Jadeja deliberately changed direction. To the commentators, it seemed like it was a natural angle that Jadeja was taking. Since he was turning back, he was obviously going to have a look at where the ball was heading.

He had a polite enquiry with the ump on seeing the giant screen display OUT and walked off.
