Controversial DRS Decision Spurs PCB to Address Umpiring Concerns

A controversial Decision Review System (DRS) ruling against Mohammad Rizwan during the second Test between Pakistan and Australia has prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to raise concerns about umpiring and technological issues with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

During the match, Rizwan was given out after Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, decided to review for a caught behind in the second innings. Despite nothing conclusive being observed on the hotspot, there was a clear spike in the snickometer. Pakistan’s camp later clarified that the ball hit just above the wrist of the batsman-wicketkeeper, expressing their dissatisfaction with the technology’s assessment.

Reports suggest that PCB chief Zaka Ashraf held a meeting with team director Mohammad Hafeez after the match, where Hafeez conveyed concerns about the inadequate use of technology. Pakistan lost the second Test by 79 runs under the leadership of Shan Masood.

Expressing his disappointment, Hafeez, a former cricketer, stated that while he is not against technology in the game, it can sometimes create doubt and confusion. He criticized the inconsistency of the on-field umpires, highlighting its impact on the game’s integrity.

“If you look at the entire game, there were very inconsistent decisions by the umpires. We play this beautiful game of cricket with natural instinct, and we all know the basics of the game,” remarked Hafeez in an interview with NDTV.

Adding further, he emphasized, “I am not against technology in the game. But if it brings doubt and confusion, it is not acceptable. Some decisions were not understandable. The ball hitting the stumps is always out. I will never understand why there is an umpire’s call.”

Currently trailing 2-0 in the three-match series, Pakistan will be aiming to make a comeback in the final match scheduled to begin on January 3 in Sydney.
