Captain Shubman Gill arrives in Gujarat as new chapter awaits

Gujarat Titans (GT) have received a significant boost ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season as their captain, Shubman Gill, has joined the squad in Ahmedabad. Gill, who was the reigning Orange Cap holder, took over the captaincy from Hardik Pandya, who moved to the Mumbai Indians (MI) during the off-season.

Gill’s arrival comes after a successful Test series against England, where he played a pivotal role in India‘s 4-1 series win. Despite a challenging start as a No. 3 batter, Gill scored 452 runs in nine innings, finishing second on the run-scoring charts behind Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Since joining the Gujarat Titans from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, Gill has been in outstanding form, amassing 890 runs in 17 innings, including three centuries, during the 2023 IPL campaign, where GT finished as runners-up.

The GT coaching staff and players are eagerly anticipating Gill’s inputs and leadership, especially given his recent success and experience in the IPL. GT will begin their IPL 2024 campaign with a home match against MI at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, March 24.

Ashish Nehra talks about Shubman Gill new role

GT head coach Ashish Nehra expressed his excitement about Gill’s growth as a person and captain, emphasizing the franchise’s commitment to helping him develop in both roles. Nehra also highlighted the importance of Gill maximizing the resources available, including the guidance of experienced players like Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan.

“We as a franchise, as a support staff, are really excited to help him grow as a person more than as a captain. If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward,” Nehra said in a recent interview.

Gill’s leadership and performance will be crucial for GT as they aim to build on their recent successes and establish themselves as a dominant force in the IPL. With a strong squad and a talented captain at the helm, GT will be looking to make a strong start to the season and compete for the title.
