Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024 Schedule Announced

The Indian cricket team’s schedule for the highly anticipated five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia in late 2024 has been officially announced by Cricket Australia (CA). This series marks a significant moment in cricket history, as it will be the first time since 1991-92 that India and Australia will engage in a five-Test series.

The much-anticipated series will kick off with the first Test scheduled to be played at the Perth Stadium from November 22 to 26. This will be followed by a day-night pink-ball Test at the iconic Adelaide Oval in the first week of December. The pink-ball Test holds special significance for India, as it will be their fifth day-night Test and their second against Australia since December 2020, where India suffered a defeat after scoring their lowest Test total of 36 all out.

Moving forward, the third Test will take place at The Gabba in Brisbane, known for its fast and bouncy pitch. Following this, the teams will head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the traditional Boxing Day Test, scheduled from December 26 to 30, 2024. The series will conclude with the fifth Test in Sydney in January 2025, promising an exciting and nail-biting finish to the series.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized the board’s commitment to preserving the rich heritage of Test cricket, stating, “Our ongoing collaboration with Cricket Australia in extending the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to five Tests underscores our collective commitment to nurturing and elevating Test cricket’s significance.”

CA Chair Mike Baird expressed his delight at the extension of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to five Tests, highlighting the intense rivalry between the two cricketing nations. Baird expressed confidence in Pat Cummins‘ World Champion team to overcome the skill and depth of the Indian team, who have displayed brilliance in their last two tours to Australia, including consecutive historic triumphs in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 series.

India, the reigning Border-Gavaskar Trophy champions, will be looking to continue their dominance in the upcoming series. The last five-match Test series between India and Australia in 1991-92 ended with the hosts, Australia, recording a 4-1 win. This series is remembered for some iconic performances, including Ravi Shastri’s double hundred in Sydney and a young Sachin Tendulkar‘s century on a fiery Perth surface.
