BCCI’s Last Minute Information Kept IPL Franchises in Dilemma

The deadline for submission of the full IPL squad is August 20, as decided by the BCCI. But some of the franchises have been in a dilemma till the last minute.

Franchises in Dilemma

England & Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia asked the players to take call on their IPL participation for the remaining 31 IPL matches of this season. So, some franchises had to wait for those overseas players’ nod. One of the franchise officials had told InsideSport.co, “We have to submit the squad by August 20 but I can’t confirm whether all foreign players will be available. We are still in talks with some players. The good thing is that the T20 World Cup will be held in UAE and that gives us confidence that all players will be available but we are still waiting on some players’ final confirmation.”

Deadline Issue Explained

IPL 2021 will be followed by T20 World Cup and then Australia and England will be busy preparing for the Ashes. If the players participate in the IPL, they will be out for months for the league followed by the international assignments. So the franchises were waiting for the BCCI nod. Another franchise official explained the situation. “Yes, BCCI’s delay in responding officially did play a part in last-minute hassle. We kept hearing about players’ availability in the news but BCCI only confirmed that officially in August. That’s why the August 20 deadline is a little early for us. But if that’s the norm, we will adhere to that.”

Meanwhile, most of the franchises have confirmed dates for their departure for the UAE to set up camp ahead of the next phase of the IPL. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians already reached Dubai on August 13. Delhi Capitals will leave on August 21 followed by Kolkata Knight Riders on August 27 and Punjab Kings on August 29. Sunrisers Hyderabad will leave on August 31 while Rajasthan Royals will reach Dubai on September 2. Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore are yet to confirm dates.
