Asia Cup Cancelled, Announced by Sourav Ganguly

On July 8, Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president announced that the Asia Cup 2020 has been cancelled. In an Instagram chat he did not elaborate much and also opined that it is difficult to speculate which would be India’s first international series keeping the current situation in mind.

No Asia Cup

Asia Cup 2020 was scheduled for September and the United Arab Emirates was the selected venue for the same. Pakistan were the original host but with the BCCI not interested much in sending their cricketers to Pakistan, a neutral venue was decided after mutual discussion. Meanwhile, the announcement from the BCCI head cleared that there would not be any Asia Cup this year.

In an Instagram chat with Vikrant Gupta, Sourav Ganguly mentioned, “Asia Cup has been cancelled.” He did not give any details and opined, “It’s difficult to say which will be India’s first international series. We’ve done our preparations but we can’t do much till we know the government rules. We are not in a hurry because the health of players is of the utmost importance. We are monitoring things monthly.”

On the future of IPL and T20 World Cup

While speaking about the possibility of the IPL 2020, Ganguly said,”(If the T20 World Cup gets cancelled) then we will try everything to stage the IPL. It is very important for Indian cricket. We will try to host it in India.” He also added, “The cancellation of T20 World Cup will happen soon because all countries are asking for a direction from ICC. We’ll know by mid-July. My gut-feeling is saying it’s tough.”

Ganguly insisted that the global cricket body is trying their best to host the World Cup and also informed, “We don’t have a window for IPL yet because we have to play in Australia in December. That’s FTP and we can’t change that. Australia is one country where, apart from Melbourne, things are returning to normal.”
