Arun Dhumal Addresses England Players’ Exit and Impact Player Rule

The choice of England’s T20 World Cup-bound players to forgo the Indian Premier League playoffs in favor of national duties has sparked debate within the cricketing community. Opinions vary on whether this decision is justified or detrimental. While some applaud their prioritization of representing their country, others criticize the potential impact on their IPL teams’ performance. This division underscores the complex balancing act faced by professional cricketers, torn between commitments to their national squad and their franchise in the lucrative IPL.

Arun Dhumal, chairman of the IPL Governing Council, described the situation as ‘unfortunate,’ noting that the ECB had previously assured the BCCI of their players’ availability for the entire tournament. The unexpected withdrawal of England’s T20 World Cup-bound cricketers has disrupted plans, creating disappointment given the initial commitment from the ECB to allow their participation throughout the IPL season.

He said, “It was given as a commitment that they will be available for the entire tournament. It was indeed very unfortunate with the way things happened this time around. Unfortunately, there was some change of guard at the ECB and so, the new people who took over did not know about the bilateral series they had planned, and they wanted to put their best team there. Due to that, the confusion arose.”

England’s Upcoming Series Against Pakistan:

The bilateral series between England and Pakistan was included in the Future Tour Programs (FTP) for 2023 to 2027. This schedule was released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in August 2022, predating the appointments of the current ECB chairman Richard Thompson and CEO Richard Gould, who assumed their roles in September 2022 and February 2023, respectively.

Nevertheless, a question arises about a possible communication gap between the two Boards regarding player availability. Shortly after England revealed its World Cup squad, the selected players were instructed to return home for the series against Pakistan, commencing on May 22. This sequence of events suggests potential miscommunication or oversight in coordinating the players’ commitments between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

England’s team managing director, Rob Key, revealed that captain Jos Buttler supported the decision for English players to exit the IPL playoffs. Although the Board initiated discussions, no agreement was reached, leading to several England players, including Buttler and Phil Salt, departing India before the IPL league stage concluded. This early departure underscored the priority given to national commitments over the remaining IPL matches.

Arun Dhumal further said, “We have had good discussions with the ECB and hopefully, it won’t happen again in the future. A few people who had earlier committed to this aren’t with the ECB now, but ideally, even if there was a change of guard, things should have happened the way it was planned.”

The four franchises that advanced to the playoffs had to scramble for contingency plans due to the sudden absence of the England players. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar suggested imposing financial penalties on players who exit the tournament midway. This proposal aimed to address the disruption caused by players’ early departures and ensure greater commitment to the IPL from participating athletes.

He further said, “We have always discussed with all the boards regarding the player availability and in case a player needs to go back due to genuine reasons, we definitely allow that. They have been quite cooperative so far, so all the players and the Board are aligned with the success of this tournament and love being part of the IPL.”

He added, “The IPL is the second-biggest league and the kind of numbers we see, in terms of global audience, has become a benchmark for others to follow for how to conduct a world-class league. We are also very thankful to the other Boards who have been equal partners in this IPL. Everyone understands their responsibilities. I don’t think apart from minor hiccups, there’s anything to worry about…”

Arun Dhumal’s Opinion About Impact Player Rule:

The Impact Player rule has been a contentious topic, with many cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, expressing their opposition. Dhumal, however, mentioned that the Board will consider feedback before deciding on the rule’s future. The ultimate decision will be shaped by the opinions and insights gathered from players and other stakeholders involved in the tournament.

He said, “I don’t understand the chatter that has been going around about the Impact Player rule. It has made a significant impact and the fans loved the way the tournament went about it. We will definitely discuss with the stakeholders as to what they feel about it…”

The mid-innings substitution rule, introduced in the last IPL season, has generated considerable controversy. Like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli also voiced concerns, stating that the rule “disrupts the balance” of the game. This feedback from prominent players highlights the ongoing debate about the rule’s impact on the sport, suggesting that its implementation might need to be reconsidered to maintain the integrity and balance of the game.

He further said, “It’s given one more opportunity to a batter to perform and one more bowler to give his best. The best all-rounders, in any which way, are part of the team, and it’s just that they have to raise the bar and be among the best ones. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) was there, Axar Patel was there, Sunil Narine was there and they have all been part of the tournament.”

He concluded, “The best bowlers also made the cut, it’s just that there were 250-plus scores, but the fans loved it. We will take feedback and in case it needs some correction, we will look into it.”
