Akash Chopra wants 3 test series for the Final of the World Test Championship

Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer turned broadcaster, demanded that the World Test Championship (WTC) final be decided by a three-match series format. He made these as India and Australia were playing in the WTC 2021–23 championship game at The Oval.

The World Test Championship was established by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to promote Test cricket. Over a two-year period, the top nine teams will compete in six bilateral series, three at home and three away.

The top two teams with the best win percentage on the points table will qualify for the WTC final, despite the fact that there is no set number of fixtures determined for each club. The WTC final champions are recognized as champions for a period of two years.

Chopra, who participated in 10 Test matches for the Indian men’s team in 2003 and 2004, criticized the International Cricket Council for the event’s one-game final. He demanded three games to decide the two-year WTC cycle champions, emulating the Commonwealth Bank Tri-Series final.

Akash Chopra said

“Find it really uncomfortable that you are okay to have a championship spread over two years…but can’t find time for a three-test series at the end of the 24 month cycle. While everybody claims that it’s the Ultimate Format, nobody has the time to give the respect it deserves,” he wrote on his Twitter profile.

“If you can’t accommodate three-tests, why bother with the finals at all? The team that has topped the table over 2-years should be given the mace…as it used to be the case earlier. In any case, there’s no uniformity in terms of how many Tests each series should have,” he added.

After losing to New Zealand in Southampton a few years ago, India is competing in their second WTC final. Australia, on the other side, has successfully qualified.
