During his match-winning innings against South Africa in the second match of the series, Virat Kohli, as usual, registered a number of records to his name. One such feat saw Kohli surpassing Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi during his knock against the Proteas. Interestingly, Shahid Afridi took to his Twitter account to congratulate Kohli but for some another record.
Records by Kohli in the match
While chasing 150, men in blue were suddenly in trouble after losing two back to back wickets. Virat Kohli emerged as the saviour again and went on to score his 22nd half-century in the shortest format of the game. His unbeaten 72 off 52 won the match for his team and helped him go past Rohit Sharma, to become the top scorer in T20I cricket with 2,441 runs.
He also grabbed the 11th man of the match award of his career in the T20 format of the game. Currently, he is in the second position in the overall list along with Shahid Afridi (11). The all-time list is currently leading by Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi (12).
Afridi congratulated Kohli
Moreover, he is the only batsman to have a batting average above 50 across all three formats of the game- 53.14 in Tests, 60.31 in ODIs, and 50.85 in T20Is. He also averaged over 50 in three formats last year. After this unique record, ICC wished Indian captain on Twitter which was retweeted by Afridi later. Afridi praised Virat for such amazing record and wrote, “Congratulations @imVkohli You are a great player indeed, wish you continued success, keep entertaining cricket fans all around the world.”
After securing the win in the second game India is now gearing up to win the series in Bangalore by clinching victory in the third and final match. The final match will be played on September 22 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium where Indians will start as favourites with 1-0 lead.
