The IPL 2024 is going on with exceptional thrills. As the tournament is going to more depth, the competition is getting intense. But in this moment, Delhi Capitals had a setback as Mitchell Marsh was ruled out from the rest of the IPL season. But they have announced Gulbadin Naib as his replacement.
Mitchell Marsh’s Injury:
Delhi Capitals will miss the services of Mitchell Marsh for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury he sustained three weeks ago. His last appearance was in Visakhapatnam, where Delhi Capitals faced a defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders by 106 runs. In that match, Marsh was dismissed for a duck by fellow Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc. Before leaving for home, Marsh had played four games for DC in IPL 2024, scoring a total of 61 runs in three innings, with a highest score of 23. Additionally, he bowled eight overs, taking one wicket at an economy rate of 12.87.
Returning to Perth from India, Marsh sought medical advice from Cricket Australia‘s medical staff. Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Delhi Capitals, disclosed at an event in Delhi that Marsh would not be returning to India. Despite his absence from the IPL, Ponting reassured that Marsh’s recovery and rehabilitation were progressing well, indicating that his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, where he is expected to lead Australia, would not be jeopardized.
Gulbadin Naib Replaces Marsh:
Delhi Capitals have secured the services of Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh for the remainder of the IPL season. Naib, who has represented Afghanistan in 82 ODIs and 62 T20Is and also served as the captain, will be making his debut appearance in the IPL after being acquired for his reserve price of INR 50 lakh. This signing marks Naib’s first opportunity to showcase his skills in the prestigious league, where he is expected to bolster Delhi Capitals’ squad with his medium-pace bowling and batting prowess.
The 31-year-old all-rounder caught the eye during the recent T20I series against India, where he impressed with two half-centuries in matches held in Indore and Bengaluru respectively. Naib’s inclusion adds depth and experience to the Delhi Capitals lineup, providing them with a valuable asset as they continue their campaign in the IPL.
After starting the season with some setbacks, they finally bounced back. They registered some consecutive wins. Out of their 9 matches, they won 4 and faced defeats in five matches. Currently, they are holding the sixth position of the points table.
