In a significant blow to Pakistan’s Test campaign against Australia, legspinner Abrar Ahmed has been ruled out of the opening Test due to a knee injury. The setback occurred during Pakistan’s match against the Australia Prime Minister XI, where Abrar sustained an injury to his right knee. While his participation in the subsequent two Tests remains uncertain, the team management has opted for caution and included Sajid Khan as a backup option in the squad.
The injury saga unfolded with a provisional diagnosis based on a medical team assessment, prompting an immediate MRI scan. The results indicated the need for an intervention, which is scheduled to take place in Perth on Monday. Following this, Abrar will undergo conservative rehabilitation under the supervision of the team’s medical staff. The nature and extent of his recovery will be crucial in determining his availability for the remainder of the Test series.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement regarding Abrar’s situation, stating, “He has not been ruled out of the Test series yet, but keeping the player’s well-being in mind for this and future tours, further assessment before the second Test will ascertain his availability on this tour.”
The first Test between Pakistan and Australia is set to commence on December 14 at Perth. The timing of Abrar’s injury couldn’t be more challenging, considering the pivotal role he plays in Pakistan’s bowling attack. The second Test is scheduled for December 26 at the MCG, with the final Test slated to be held at the SCG from January 3.
The absence of Abrar Ahmed is a setback for Pakistan, and the team management will closely monitor his recovery process, hoping for a swift return to bolster the bowling lineup.
