AB de Villiers clarifies comments about Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s second child

Former South African cricket captain AB de Villiers has clarified his recent comments about Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, expecting their second child. In a recent YouTube live session, de Villiers had suggested that Kohli’s absence from the first two Tests against England was due to his impending fatherhood. However, he has now stated that this information was incorrect.

Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, de Villiers acknowledged his mistake and emphasized that family comes first for Kohli. He expressed his regret for the incorrect information shared on his YouTube channel, stating, “That information was wrong and not true at all. I think whatever’s best for Virat’s family comes first.”

De Villiers had initially mentioned during his YouTube session that he had communicated with Kohli, who had expressed the need to be with his family at this time. He had also mentioned a message exchange where Kohli allegedly confirmed the news of Anushka’s pregnancy, saying, “Yes, his second child is on the way. Yes, it’s family time and things are important to him. If you are not true and genuine to yourself, you lose track of what you are here for. I think most people’s priority is family. You can’t judge Virat for that. Yes, we miss him, but he has made the right decision.”

While de Villiers’ original comments sparked speculation about Kohli’s absence from the ongoing Test series against England, the Indian cricket team is yet to announce its squad for the upcoming third Test, scheduled to begin on February 15 in Rajkot. There have been reports suggesting that Kohli may miss the third and fourth Tests as well.

Despite the initial confusion caused by de Villiers’ remarks, he has extended his best wishes to Kohli and his family. He expressed his hope that Kohli can return to the field stronger after his break, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing family.

Kohli had pulled out of the first two Tests against England, citing personal reasons. His absence has led to speculation about the reasons behind his decision, with fans eagerly awaiting his return to international cricket.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Kohli or Anushka Sharma regarding their family plans. The couple, who tied the knot in 2017, welcomed their first child, daughter Vamika, in January 2021.
