Faf du Plessis might be replaced by an “interim captain” according to a statement by Cricket South Africa. He will be captaining the Test side in India but there is a chance for a new leader in white-ball cricket for South Africa.

The Story

The acting director of Cricket South Africa, Corrie van Zyl said on Tuesday, “Faf will be the captain of the Test team and then we will talk about the white-ball strategy to 2023 and how that will affect decision-making.” He further added, “It’s important to look forward to 2023 as well. We need a strategy to 2023, so in terms of appointing the captain we will look at how we approach that. We are having a selection meeting in the next day and a half to confirm that.”

What Faf says

According to the board, the idea is to focus on the next World Cup in four-years time. So Faf will remain in the charge of the longer format of the captain whereas Cricket South Africa will start for planning for 2023 World Cup. As a part of the strategy, there will be a new captain for the ODI and T20I of South Africa cricket. Faf, although on Saturday during CSA’s awards ceremony hinted that he would like to captain the side but he wants to see things practically as well. “I’m 35, I’ve probably got two or three years left, hopefully more. You can’t plan for that kind of thing, you have to try and plan for what every year looks like – and those are what the conversations with CSA will have to be, What does year one look like? Year two? And then if there is a year three, what does that look like?”

The coming months will see the South African cricket teams, South Africa A, men’s team and women’s team travelling to India. The A squad has been already announced whereas the senior team will be disclosed soon in this week.
