History:

Sherfane Eviston Rutherford, born on 15 August 1998, is a dynamic left-handed batsman known for his explosive batting style. While batting is his forte, he also possesses right-arm fast-medium bowling skills. Recognized for his impactful performances in the middle order, Rutherford adds flair and excitement to the game with his versatile abilities. 

Sherfane Rutherford, a rising talent in West Indies cricket, marked his ODI debut with a cap number 220 on 3 December 2023 against England. His T20I journey began earlier, on 22 December 2018, with cap number 78 against Bangladesh. However, his last T20I appearance was on 19 January 2020 against Ireland.

Rutherford’s inclusion in the West Indies national side showcases his prowess as a promising player, and cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate his future performances. Rutherford initiated his first-class journey with Guyana in the 2016–17 Regional Four-Day Competition, debuting on 15 April 2017. His entry into List A cricket for Guyana occurred during the 2017–18 Regional Super50 on 31 January 2018. The promising cricketer gained recognition in June 2018 when he secured a spot in the Cricket West Indies B Team for the inaugural Global T20 Canada tournament. 

Demonstrating his batting prowess, Rutherford emerged as the leading run-scorer for the Cricket West Indies B Team, amassing 230 runs in eight matches during the tournament, leaving a notable impact on the cricketing landscape.

In October 2018, Rutherford earned a spot in the West Indies’ Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against India, although he didn’t get to play. In December 2018, he was once more included in the West Indies’ T20I squad, this time for their series against Bangladesh.

He marked his T20I debut for the West Indies against Bangladesh on 22 December 2018. Then, in December 2023, he received another call-up to the West Indies squad for the T20 series against England.

Rutherford initiated his Twenty20 career with Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2018 Caribbean Premier League on 9 August 2018. In October 2018, he secured a spot in the Khulna Titans team following the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. 

In December 2018, the Delhi Capitals acquired him in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League.

 In June 2019, Rutherford played for the Edmonton Royals in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament. Subsequently, he joined the Sylhet Thunder in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League in November 2019. Come July 2020, he returned to the Guyana Amazon Warriors squad for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League.

On 11 September 2021, Sunrisers Hyderabad included Rutherford in their squad for the second phase of the 2021 IPL, replacing Jonny Bairstow. In February 2022, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League. Moving ahead, in July 2022, the Galle Gladiators signed him for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League.

Sherfane Rutherford, the West Indies all-rounder, achieved a truly unique honor as the Player of the Series in the Global T20 Canada tournament. In a surprising twist during the post-match ceremony, West Indies legend Clive Lloyd handed Rutherford not just a customary check but a special reward: half an acre of land in the USA! The Player of the Tournament’s check was not just about money; it symbolized a piece of land, making Rutherford’s achievement stand out in an extraordinary way. It was a memorable and unusual recognition for his outstanding performance in the cricket series.

In ODIs, he has scored 72 runs in three matches, displaying an average of 24 and a healthy strike rate of 78.26. His T20I journey includes seven matches, where he accumulated 138 runs at a dynamic strike rate of 150.00. 

In the realm of bowling, the talented cricketer has made notable contributions across various formats. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has taken a wicket in three matches, with an economical spell of 1/24. His T20 International journey includes three matches, where he claimed a wicket at an average of 72.00. Stepping onto the first-class stage, he showcased his prowess with a total of 33 wickets in 17 matches, featuring a remarkable performance of 6/32.
