Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has named a surprise candidate for the highly debated Test captaincy spot. The right-arm off-spinner wants BCCI to consider handing the Test leadership to Ravindra Jadeja.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s recent test retirement left a void on the leadership front. Since then, many reports have stated that Shubman Gill is next in line to become the red-ball format captain. While many experts backed Jasprit Bumrah, the board is considering Gill for the role.
R. Ashwin agreed with Bumrah being the ideal candidate for captaincy, snubbing the workload concerns. He also threw a new name in the leadership mix.
Speaking on his YouTube show ‘Ash ki Baat’, Ashwin said that Ravindra Jadeja could be considered for the role.
“Let’s not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in the conversation. If you’re willing to train a new guy for two years and then make him captain, Jadeja can do that for two years too. They (India) can even play him as vice-captain (under Jadeja). It will seem like I’m throwing a wildcard,” Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“We all wish to captain India after playing for the team. Jadeja too must be having that dream. He has also captained Chennai Super Kings, although that did not go well. I’m not saying he should become captain, but definitely be considered,” he added
“Whatever team gets selected will be the team of Gautam Gambhir. The most experienced player apart from Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah is Gambhir only. He will have huge say in the appointment of captain as he has to groom the side,” Ashwin explained.
Ashwin, on his show, also praised Gill and his impressive batting. He also advised the top-order batter to follow domestic cricket to pick the best playing XI for India.
“I hope Gujarat Titans qualify for the IPL playoffs. If Gill gains honour there, it might make his transition to leadership easier. But captaincy, especially in Tests, is not about one good season. A leader should know what’s happening in first-class cricket too,” Ashwin said.
