South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has spoken out after missing selection for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. The match will take place at Lord’s from June 11, and the Proteas will try to end their long wait for an ICC trophy. Nortje, however, will not be part of the 15-member squad.

Nortje Speaks on Omission

Anrich Nortje revealed that he has been fit and available for selection over the past year. He said he was ready to represent his country but was overlooked by the selectors.

“I have been available for the last year—from before the World Cup to December,” Nortje said in an interview. “I was only picked again in December to play. There were a few series I wasn’t selected for, mostly to give chances to others.”

The 31-year-old pacer added, “From my side, I have been available to play for my country, but they haven’t pressed on my button.”

Nortje last played for South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup against India. He performed well, finishing with figures of 2/26 in that match. He was also South Africa’s second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, claiming 15 wickets overall. Despite his strong performance, he has not featured in international cricket since then.

Injuries Impact Nortje’s Career

Nortje’s career has been interrupted by injuries over the past few years. A serious back injury forced him to miss the 2023 ODI World Cup. He also sat out part of the 2024-25 SA20 season and missed the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The pacer has played 83 matches across formats for South Africa, taking a total of 159 wickets. His last Test and ODI appearances came in 2023.

South Africa Eye First ICC Title Since 1998

South Africa will face Australia in the WTC 2025 final. Australia are the defending champions, having defeated India in the 2023 final. The Proteas, on the other hand, will aim to win their first ICC title since the 1998 KnockOut Trophy.

Nortje’s absence has raised questions among fans and experts, with many feeling his pace could have been an asset against a strong Australian side. Whether this marks a turning point in his international career remains to be seen.
