Shubman Gill is expected to become the new captain of the Indian Test team, according to recent reports. The 25-year-old batter is likely to lead the side in the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Rishabh Pant, who has made a strong comeback, may be named as the vice-captain.

Pant Set To Be Vice-Captain

Rishabh Pant is one of India’s top performers in overseas Tests. He has scored hundreds in Australia, England, and South Africa, and also has several scores in the 90s. Due to his consistency and experience, the selectors are considering him for the vice-captain’s role.

A BCCI source said, “If Bumrah isn’t the captain, there is no point offering him the vice-captaincy.” Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains a concern, and he may not be available for the entire series.

Selectors Thought About Giving Captaincy To Kohli

The selection committee also discussed the idea of bringing back Virat Kohli as Test captain for this series. They felt it would give Gill more time to prepare for leadership. However, Kohli has not made any official decision about his Test future.

Rohit Sharma has already retired from Test cricket, which has created a leadership gap. The BCCI has not confirmed its talks with Kohli. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia have not commented.

A source close to the developments said, “Gill is young and still growing. But with Rohit out and Bumrah not fully fit, Gill seems to be the right choice.”

KL Rahul Not In Consideration, Sai Sudharsan In Line

KL Rahul is not being considered for leadership. He is over 33 years old and has struggled with consistency. Despite doing well in Australia, his overall Test average is below 35 after 50 matches.

Among the new faces, Tamil Nadu’s Sai Sudharsan is almost certain to make the squad. He has impressed the selectors and could open the innings or bat at No.3.

Team Announcement Coming Soon

The BCCI will announce the Indian Test squad for the England tour by the end of the third week of May. The India A team will be revealed earlier, possibly next week.

The upcoming series is expected to be a big challenge, and the team’s new leadership will be under the spotlight.
